Legendary singer and nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar, whose melodious renditions have contributed largely to the Indian film industry, turned 86 years of age today.
Starting her career at the age on 13, her contribution to the Indian music industry has spanned over seven decades. She has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Marathi and Hindi.
From the first hit song she sung for ‘Pahili Mangalagaur’ in 1942 to the last song she recorded for the Hindi film ‘Satrangee Parachute’ in 2011, she has entertained four generations over the span more than 60 years.
It is very difficult to name a few songs from her collections as she got majority of hits in her singing career as a play back singer. She has given music for 6 Marathi films and also produced 5 Marathi and Hindi movies together. She has delivered some of the most memorable duets with Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi , Kishore Kumar and Mukhesh.
She has received many honours like Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for giving her utmost contributions to the traditional Indian culture and heavily contributing to cinema. She has been termed as ‘the most perfect’ voice by the world.
The goddess of music, as referred in India, has featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world. The claim was that she had recorded approximately 25,000 solo, duet, and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages between 1948 to 1974.
