Usha Khanna is the most prolific and successful woman music director in the history of Hindi cinema. Before her, Bombay cinema had seen only two other women composers: Jaddan Bai and Saraswati Devi. But undeniably Gwalior-born Khanna has enjoyed the longest innings.

Usha Khanna entered the film industry with the 1959 superhit, Dil Deke Dekho, which included a couple of songs inspired from popular Western tunes. Nearly six decades later, she continues to work, albeit sporadically. Some of her major chartbusters came in well-known films such as Hum Hindustani, Saajan Bina Suhagan, Dada, Aap To Aise Na The, Sweekar Kiya Maine and Souten. But many of her popular songs also came in small budget films (Lal Bangla, Shabnam, Sabak, Hawas, Ek Sapera Ek Lutera, Honeymoon) and continue to be hummed today.
