Today marks the 35th death anniversary of #Jaidev, a legendary figure in the Hindi film music industry (06/01/1987). Known for his sensitive and thought-provoking compositions, Jaidev’s music was deep, spiritual, and ethereal, often described as soulful and sublime.
Although his music didn’t appeal to the masses, Jaidev was a preferred composer for low budget, art, and new wave films. He collaborated with renowned filmmakers like Chetan Anand, K A Abbas, Hrishikesh Mukherji, Muzaffar Ali, Basu Chatterji, Bhimsen, Ved Rahi, and Amol Palekar. His works often featured lesser-known actors, a choice he never regretted. Many of his films, such as ‘Joru Ka Bhai’, ‘Anjali’, ‘Kinare Kinare’, ‘Do Boond Paani’, ‘Reshma aur Shera’, ‘Prem Parbat’, ‘Parinay’, ‘Alaap’, ‘Gaman’, ‘Tumhare Liye’, ‘Dooriyan’, ‘Ankahee’, and ‘Chand Grahan’ (with the exception of ‘Gharonda’), were not commercially successful but are remembered today for their rich, soulful, and award-winning music.
Jaidev was a recipient of four Sur Singar Samsad awards, the Lata Mangeshkar Award from the Madhya Pradesh Government, and three National Awards for ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, ‘Gaman’, and ‘Ankahee’. Despite his immense talent and contributions, he did not receive the recognition he deserved, reflecting a sad aspect of modern cinema’s musical culture.
Jaidev passed away on January 6, 1987, leaving behind a legacy that was largely unsung and unwept at the time. However, time has only enhanced his reputation among music lovers, ensuring that his extensive and excellent body of work remains unforgettable. His melodious contributions to the music world are enduring and continue to resonate.
