Today marks the 14th anniversary of Bina Rai Ji’s passing. Born on July 13, 1931, and passing away on December 6, 2009, Bina Rai, also known as Beena Rai, was a celebrated Indian actress famous for her roles in black and white Hindi cinema. She shone in classics like “Anarkali” (1953), “Ghunghat” (1960), and “Taj Mahal” (1963), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for “Ghunghat”. Her film journey began unexpectedly when she won a talent contest and a role in “Kali Ghata” (1951) while studying arts at Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow. Bina Rai’s life had remarkable coincidences with the number 13: born on July 13, she signed her first film contract on July 13, 1950, for “Kali Ghata”, which released on July 13, 1951, the same day she got engaged to actor Premnath. Despite setbacks in films produced under their P.N. Films banner, Bina Rai’s performances with Pradeep Kumar in “Anarkali”, “Taj Mahal”, and “Ghunghat” are highly remembered. Bina Rai retired from acting, citing limited roles for older women. She fondly remembered her husband Premnath, who passed away in 1992.
