Think 1970s Hindi film music and one of the first names that springs to mind is Shailendra Singh. Blessed with a unique voice and good looks, Singh was handpicked by Raj Kapoor to be the voice of his son, Rishi Kapoor, whom he was launching as a hero in Bobby (1973). It’s said Raj Kapoor was so impressed with his voice in Bobby that he predicted a bright future for the singer.

For the next decade and a half, Singh lent his voice to Rishi Kapoor and a few other actors as well. Songs like Main shayar toh nahin (Bobby), Hamne tumko dekha (Khel Khel Mein ), Tumko mere dil ne (Rafoo Chakkar), Kai din se mujhe (Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se) and Hoga tumse pyara kaun (Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai) are counted amongst the finest romantic numbers.

Despite having an original voice and gaining instant popularity when he burst into the playback scene in the ’70s, Shailendra Singh never got his due.
