Remembering Satyen Kappu on his birth anniversary.

Satyen Kappu, also known as Satyendra Kapoor, was a well-known character artist in Hindi cinema. He was one of the most sought-after character artists during the 70s. He mostly played supporting roles of a father, relative, uncle, police officer, doctor and villainous roles.

Satyen Kappu began his career in 1952 with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and took part in plays. He worked with top playwrights and directors of the time, including filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak.

He worked in more than 200 films as a character actor with the top heroes of the time in a career spanned from the early 1960s to the early 2000s. Some of his prominent films included ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Mausam’, ‘Anhoni’, ‘Jawani Diwani’, ‘Seeta aur Geeta’, ‘Yadon ki Barat’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Don’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Lawaaris’, ‘Mard’, ‘Coolie’, and ‘Deewaar’.

His most remembered roles are Ramlal in Sholay (1975) and Amitabh Bachchan’s father in Deewaar (1975).

He also worked in Gujarati and Marwari movies.

Satyen Kappu passed away on 27 October 2007 in Mumbai following a massive cardiac arrest.
