Remembering legendary Singer Mubarak Begum on her 4th death anniversary.
Mubarak Begum was born in Rajasthan. She moved to Mumbai when she was 10 years old.
She started her career with light music recitals with All India Radio. Her career as a playback singer with Hindi film industry started when she got a break in the movie, Aaiye (1949), with the song “Mohe Aane Lagi Angrayi, Aja Aja Balam” for composer Shaukat Dehlvi. She also sang a duet with the then-upcoming Lata Mangeshkar.
Among her favourite memories is singing “Woh na aayenge palat kar” from ‘Devdas’ which released in 1955 starring Dilip Kumar and Vijayantimala.
The major hit in her career was the song “Kabhi Tanhaiyon Mein Yun” for composer Snehal Bhatkar in Kidar Sharma’s film Hamaari Yaad Aayegi which is, till this day, regarded as a classic rendition.
She hails from one of the elite league who shot to fame with just a handful of songs. “Mujhko Apne Gale Laga Lo”, “Sawaria Teri Yaad Mein”, “Bemuravat Bewafa” etc are amongst iconic songs of that era.
Begum also had it in her to become a mainstream singer with industry, but as the fate would have it, she too like other artists went suddenly out of the scene. But her failure wasn’t that of an obscured type, instead, she counts of a few individuals who took a toll over her career by some prominent disfavour. There were a few instances where her songs were recorded but weren’t used in the movies at all. “Pardesiyon Se Na Ankhiyan Milana” and “Agar Mujhe Na Mile Tum” was done and to be released with her voice, but was released with a singer of higher repute and preference without her consent or knowledge. And by the end of the decade of 60s, she couldn’t bag much of the singing offer and ceased to sing.
