Noor Mohammed Charlie, a member of the Memon community, was a devoted fan of Charlie Chaplin. He imitated Chaplin’s style, complete with the iconic walk and mustache, which earned him the nickname Noor Mohammad Charlie. In 1932, his unique character, Baba Charlie, was introduced in the film “Pak Daman Raqqasa,” directed by B. R. Oberoi, and quickly became a national sensation.

Noor Mohammad Charlie starred in several comedic films such as “Chand Tara” and “Ghazal,” often paired with popular actresses of that time. He even directed a successful film called “Dhandhora” and had songs picturized on him, a privilege usually reserved for lead actors. His comedic songs and catchphrases greatly influenced later comedians like Johny Walker and Mehmood.

After the partition of India, Charlie moved to Pakistan and made numerous films before returning to India in 1960. His last film, “Akeli Mat Jaiyo” (1963), was also the final production of Ranjit Studios. Denied Indian citizenship, Charlie migrated to the USA, where he passed away on June 30, 1983.
