Christened Kalyan Kumar Ganguly, Anoop Kumar was born to Gouri Devi and father Kunjalal Ganguly on January 26, 1926 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. He came to Bombay from Khandwa in his early twenties at his brother Ashok Kumar’s behest. He started out as a character actor and as a comedian in Hindi films. He was also known for his singing ability like his brothers and lent his voice for a few films.

Anoop Kumar has appeared in over 70 Hindi films. He is best remembered for his role in the film ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (1958) which also featured his famous brothers. His other notable films include Junglee, Dekh Kabira Roya, Jhumroo, Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi, Parivaar and Chor Ho To Aisa. He also acted in television serials like Talaash and Bhim Bhavani.

While most actors who excel in comic roles nurse a grievance of not being able to do many serious roles, Anoop Kumar gave a variety of performance.

Anoop Kumar died on 20 September 1997 in Mumbai.
