A pioneering figure in modern Indian theatre, he founded the “Little Theatre Group” in 1949, which later delved into political and radical theatre. His plays often reflected his Marxist ideologies. Beyond theatre, he graced over 100 Bengali and Hindi films, with iconic roles in movies like ‘Bhuvan Shome’, ‘Agantuk’, and ‘Gol Maal’. He was honored with the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1970 and received three Filmfare Best Comedian Awards. In 1990, he was bestowed the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for his lifetime contribution to theatre.
